Yama is a new solo and duo high level boss, which requires the A Kingdom Divided quest to be able to fight. Duoing is a lot easier than soloing and there are no slayer tasks that relate to Yama.

Getting to Yama

The boss is located at the bottom of the chasm of fire, and the fastest way there is using the chasm scrolls dropped by Yama, but not many people have those, so the fastest way there is using the DJR fairy ring and climbing down.
You can use the chain to get there the fastest with 83 agility, or theres also a parkour shortcut with 73 agility which is slightly slower. Alternatively you can just run the whole way down.
Yama Mechanics
Yama can be taken on with either the mage attack style or melee. Melee is faster but mage is easier to use.

Yama attacks with all 3 attack styles, and is capable of poisoning you.
In all phases, it will either use magic or ranged depending on the special attacks it uses. The blue special means it will use ranged, and red special means it uses mage. You do have some time to change your protection prayers for these attacks, since the damage registers on hit.
You can tell which special attack is coming by looking at the glyphs on the floor, where it starts at the north eastern one, and rotates clockwise.

If youre in melee distance, yama will also use melee, with ranged and mage attacks as well. The melee attacks hit right away, but you have time to flick for the mage/range so always camp melee prayer if meleeing.

So yama opens the fight with a regular attack, then it does a special attack. With the special attack, you need to run to the corresponding glyph on the ground, to the same color as the special attack. You can stand on the north eastern glyph to always negate the first special attack.
After yama does its first special attack, it does 3 regular attacks, then it does another special. The next special is the opposite color of the previous one.

Whenever you have a dark blue glyph in the cycle, theres a chance of a different special, where yama spawns 2 orbs. You have to defeat these orbs, otherwise you take big damage. And when this special occurs, it doesnt progress the cycle, so the next special attack will also be blue.

Before each special attack, yama also has an area attack, which happens 1 attack before the main special. And these include the lines of fire and the blue waves.
Eventually, after yama reaches 66 percent health, you enter the first intermission phase of the fight.

In this, you get teleported to a different area, where a minion will be shooting fireballs towards you. You need to jump over the stepping stones, avoiding the fireballs, and then defeat the minion at the end.
You should always start with a magic attack on the minion when you get there because it protects against the other two styles, and you’ll always hit the max hit, but the minion switches its protection prayers every hit.
While fighting the minion, it throws fireballs at your position, and you need to move one tile to dodge these.
Eventually, you defeat the minion, and youre teleported back to the main area for phase 2.
Now for phase 2, it works similar to phase 1, where you can see the first special attack by looking at the north eastern glyph.

But this time, if its red, there can be a massive meteor that falls from the sky, and by standing on the red glyph you can negate all damage.
If the special is blue, yama will fire a blue orb towards you, and you just stand on the blue glyph to avoid the damage.
Eventually you work down the boss to 33 percent of its health to initiate Yama’s second intermission phase.
In this phase, its exactly the same as the first intermission, where you need to jump across to the minion and defeat it. Once youve done that, you enter phase 3 yama, which is also known as the enraged phase.
In this phase, you can use magic or melee and depending on which attack style you use, the enrage phase will behave differently, and yama gains some defense back during this phase as well.

So yama will only attack with melee if youre in melee distance, which makes this phase easier to pray against.
However, Yama can hit quite hard through prayer, although not very accurately, and every time yama does a melee attack, he spawns an orb and you need to defeat it. Mage and range attack styles always max.
The more he melees you, the more his orbs spawn, which eventually gets harder to manage. In a duo, one player should use magic on the orbs, while the other player melees yama IN THE SOUTH WEST CORNER. This is because Yama will prioritize giving tank to the player in this position. Eventually , the orbs get really fast to deal with, but with the purging staff special attack, one player can get rid of the orbs quite fast.
Using melee in the enraged phase is not really recommended for learners, however meleeing is much better for the advanced strategies which ill show in a second.
And if you decide to mage the enrage phase, yama’s auto attacks alternate between range and mage, so you need to constantly change your protection prayers.

During this time, yama will throw 3 fireballs at you, 3 different times, and to dodge these, you just need to move one tile away in the opposite direction.
Also, while this is happening, there are crossed blue walls of waves that you need to dodge too, and these are avoided by running through them when theyre next to you, or you can follow these tiles I have marked which allows you to dodge both of the walls at once.
Advanced Strategies
At the end of the intermission phases, you have a couple of seconds where you can eat food without losing any damage output.
Since you get 5 seconds of protection from the corresponding attack when standing on a glyph, if you go a bit earlier to it, before the 5 seconds of protection can protect you from the area special attack then the big attack right after. This can make the fight a bit more relaxed.
Its possible to dodge the fireballs while meleeing yama, which can really increase your damage output on the boss, however this is very difficult and requires precise clicking.
Bringing surge potions and death charge for the minions is really beneficial for restoring your special attack. This allows you to get an extra full special bar before the end of the fight.
During intermission phases, you can attack the minion 3 rocks away with the purging staff allowing for an extra hit.
Also during the intermission phase, if you have the meteor attack go under the minion, it causes the minion to take damage from the meteor.
Gear & Inventory
Now for gear and inventory, and im going to show a minimum, budget and maximum setup.
When fighting yama, the best gear to use is melee and magic. You either want to prioritize melee or mage, and then bring a switch for the other attack style.
The absolute minimum setup would be bringing an arclight with some defensive armour, with a trident as your mage switch.

In your inventory, you want a super combat as well as something to remove poison. And you want a few prayer pots and some food.
The mid-tier setup includes bringing the emberlight and the purging staff, which are quite expensive to make at the moment, but they are the best mid tier weaponry to use.

You could either bring your best melee gear, or you can also bring your best mage gear if youre mainly using mage.

And for the maximum setup, you want to bring torva or oathplate armour, or ancestral if youre maining magic.
