Best ways to get Clue Scrolls (OSRS)

What's going on guys, my name's Theoatrix and in this guide I'll show you the best ways to get clue scrolls and I'll be going through them in order from beginner to master clues.

The third age pickaxe is by far the most valuable item in OSRS, now worth 12 Bill. Including the pickaxe, clue scrolls drop the top six most valuable items in the game, all worth more than the max cash limit. Here's how to get them.

Guide Outline

If you would prefer to watch a video-version of this guide, I have linked that below. Otherwise, continue scrolling to read the written-version of this guide.

Drop Rates

Opening impling jars is the fastest way to get clues in the game.

Almost every imp has a chance of giving a clue, ranging from beginner for the low-level imps up to elite for the high-level imps.

Beginner Clues

For beginner clues you can either open baby or young implings, where the young implings have a better chance of giving a clue if you're on the drop rate.

This is how much it's going to cost in imps for each clue. With beginner ones though I strongly suggest not opening imps to get them, however using implings is the fastest way to get clues.

Killing goblins is a great way to get beginner clues where they drop them at a rate of 1 in 64, killing cows or chickens is another decent way to get them. You can also obtain clue scrolls from skilling, and beginner clues are the most common clue to obtain.

You can get clues from woodcutting, mining and fishing; and the higher level spots have a better chance of giving a clue. If you're ever going to train one of those skills, you should definitely check your bank and complete any clues you have so that you can get another one passively through skilling.

Easy Clues

Next up is easy clues. In terms of buying imps the most cost effective option is young implings.

Where each easy clue is going to cost around 70k if you're on rate, the other implings are a little more expensive.

A very fast way to get an easy clue is defeating thugs in Edgeville dungeon with a ring of wealth imbued. The imbued ring halves the clue scroll drop rate of any monster within the Wilderness, and since thugs drop easy clues at a rate of 1 in 128 the drop rate is halved to 1 in 64.

Another very fast way to get an easy clue is pickpocket H.A.M. members, that requires 15 thieving and the drop rate is 1 in 50.

Defeating men in the house in Edgeville is another decent way to get a clue, dropped at a rate of 1 in 128.

You can also kill goblins to get a clue at a rate of 1 in 128 as well.

Medium Clues

Medium clues are the most common clue that people buy with impling jars, since it's more cost effective.

Eclectic impling jars cost 6K each and drop medium clues at a rate of 1 in 25. So the cost per clue is fairly reasonable with eclectics, and it's also reasonable with earth implings.

For those people that want to save money and get clues normally, cannoning Falador guards is a fast way to get a medium clues. With the medium Falador diary, the drop rate of a clue goes from 1 in 128 to 1 in 106.

If you're after the fastest medium clue, without buying implings, you can take a cannon and an imbued ring of wealth to the Ice Plateau and cannon the ice warriors. So for ice warriors, the drop rate goes down to 1 in 64 with an imbued ring of wealth, and you can kill them very fast with your cannon, but this is of course in the wilderness.

Hard Clues

Now for hard Clues it's generally not worth opening impling jars to get hard clue scrolls, but the best impling to use to save the most money is nature implings.

It still costs over 800k on average to get a hard clue from nature implings, so a great way to get hard clues without opening impling jars is defeating hellhounds in the wilderness. With an imbued ring of wealth the drop rate goes from 1 in 64, down to 1 in 32, making it a very quick way to get a clue. You can just bring three items and turn on PK skull prevention which makes it a safe way to get clues in the wilderness.

Another very fast way to get a hard clue is bursting or barraging warped jellies in the catacombs of Kourend, they drop hards at a rate of 1 in 64 and by bursting them you can defeat them very quickly. To stack them up you walk back and forth in one line of tiles, it's also a decent way to get Skotizo totems while you're getting clues.

Speaking of Skotizo, he has a 100% drop rate for hard clue scrolls, so another way you could get hard clues is by farming Skotizo totems in the catacombs. Where generally defeating the lower level monsters in the catacombs gives more totem pieces per hour.

Elite Clues

Now for elite clues. In terms of implings, opening for elites is not worthwhile, since the only imp that gives elite clues is dragon implings, and to be on the drop rate for a clue it's going to cost over 18 mil per clue.

In terms of getting an elite clue as a drop, it does take a bit more time to get one but there's a broad range of methods you can try. Defeating bosses like Zulruh, Vorkath and Cerberus are all decent ways to get an elite clue. You can also bring an imbued ring of wealth to the Wilderness bosses for a 1 in 50 chance of an elite.

Also within the Wilderness you can defeat lava dragons for a 1 in 125 chance of a clue with the imbued Ring of Wealth. There's also the black dragons in the wilderness Slayer cave which dropped them at a rate of 1 in 250 and you can also cannon them.

The shades of Morton mini-game is a decent way to get them as well, where with high level shade remains, the drop rate is 1 in 139 from golden chests. Running the Barrows mini game is a common way to get them as well, where the drop rate is only 1 in 29 if you defeat all of the Barrows Brothers.

The Gauntlet is another decent way where with just the regular Gauntlet it's 1 in 25 for an elite, for Corrupted Gauntlet it's one in 20. You could also gamble points at Barbarian assault for a one in 15 chance of an elite and that's with the high tier gambles.

Master Clues

The final clue tier is Master Clues.

You can get master Clues from completing lower tier clues, ranging from a 1 in 50 drop rate with easys, down to 1 in 5 for Elites. So a decent way to get Masters is to farm another type of clue and you'll eventually get a master.

You can also exchange one of each type of clue to Watson to receive a master clue scroll. While you're at Watson, you should also talk to the strange casket in Watson's house to activate mimics.

Anyways, that's all of the best ways to get a clue scroll in OSRS. If you enjoyed this guide sure to leave a like for more Old School Runescape content. Thanks for reading.
