20 AFK Combat Methods in OSRS

What’s going on guys, my names Theoatrix and today I'm showing 20 AFK combat training methods in Old School Runescape.

Guide Outline

If you would prefer to watch a video-version of this guide, I have linked that below. Otherwise, continue scrolling to read the written-version of this guide.

Frost Crabs (10 mins)

ree

First up, we have frost crabs, which were introduced to Old School with the most recent Varlamore update. These crabs have a -50 magic defence bonus, as well as a 100% weakness to fire spells. This makes them an excellent place to train your magic AFK, and is a much better alternative to splashing with much higher XP rates. At crabs, you can afk for 10 minutes at a time before you need to reset the aggression, and to do that you just run out of view. To be able to access frost crabs, you need to partially complete the heart of darkness quest.

Swamp Crabs (10 mins)

ree

Swamp crabs are another type of crab with unique uses. These have a negative 55 ranged defence bonus, making them an excellent place to train a pure account or low level ranged. They also have 75 hitpoints each, which is more hitpoints than both sand crabs and rock crabs.

Slayer + Goading (6 mins)

ree

The third method for this video is training your slayer while using goading potions. These are currently quite expensive to use, but having a sip will make non aggressive monsters aggressive for 6 minutes. This lets you AFK some slayer tasks that you normally couldn't, like bloodvelds or abyssal demons.

Goading Potions (6 mins)

ree

Aside from slayer, goading potions allow you to AFK pretty much any monster in the game for 6 minutes. This could be useful at somewhere like moss giants if you're farming the mossy keys for Bryophyta.  While under the goading potions effect, you can cancel it by drinking a cup of tea or teleporting.

Big Gorillas (10 mins)

ree

A very nostalgic training method for me, which is still decent in todays Old School Runescape, is fighting the big gorillas on Ape Atoll. Nearby, there’s an altar to regenerate your prayer, and to reset the aggression after 10 minutes, you just go up and down the stairs. Using Dharok’s is a popular option here, although just using your best combat gear will suffice.

Scurrius (5 mins)

ree

With a high magic and defence level, its possible to AFK Scurrius for 5 minutes at a time. By using blood barage, you can out heal all of the attacks, and at the end of each kill, your character also heals off the smaller rats. I managed to get the Scurrius pet with this method within 600 kill count, and found it was such an easy method to do. You do need at least 90 defence to be able to AFK for 5 minutes though, so this is a higher level method.

Ancient Shards (10 mins)

ree

If you're looking to upgrade to the Emberlight one day, you can AFK monsters in the Catacombs of Kourend or the giants den to passively get ancient shards and totem pieces. In general, fighting the lower levelled monsters in these areas is the fastest way to get shards, although if you're a high levelled player looking to afk, you could try hellhounds or fire giants, or any other aggressive monster where you can AFK for 10 minutes.

Kraken Splashing (20 mins)

ree

While kraken is under water, you can cast spells and you’ll receive XP based on what you would have hit. This lets you AFK for up to 20 minutes at a time before you need to interact with the client, and this gives considerably more XP than regular splashing.

Flesh Crawlers (10 mins)

ree

I feel its important to show some free to play methods as well, and one of the best free to play afk training spots is flesh crawlers in the stronghold of security. Here, you can afk for 10 minutes at mid to high levels, then you just run out of view to reset.

Rune Dragons (1-2 mins)

ree

Rune dragons are one of the best AFK money makers in the game, with 1 to 2 minute AFK intervals, while giving around 1.4 mil GP profit per hour. This is an excellent spot for an alt account, although the Dragon Slayer 2 requirement is pretty high to be able to do this.

Sulphur Naguas (10 mins)

ree

Sulphur Naguas were recently added to Old School and are now one of the best combat training spots in the game. You can AFK for 10 minutes at a time, and with their minus 4 flat armour, it means you always hit an extra 4 damage for every successful hit. This means fast weapons or weapons that hit multiple times are the most effective.

Vyres (5 mins)

ree

Possibly the best AFK combat money making method in the game, is defeating Vyres. They drop blood shards, which are worth 11 mil each right now. You can AFK here for around 5 minutes at a time, but you’ll want to keep one eye on the screen in case you get a blood shard drop. To access Vyres, you require the sins of the father quest.

Brutal Black Dragons (2 mins)

ree

Another AFK combat money maker is brutal black dragons, where you can AFK for around 2 minutes at a time. You can make about 1 mil an hour with a dragon hunter crossbow and its a very low attention, low effort method. To access brutal black dragons, you do need level 77 slayer.

Dark Beasts (20 mins)

ree

There’s a special monster in Old School that never loses aggression, and that is dark beasts. These will attack you endlessly, allowing you to AFK for 20 minutes before you stop attacking. Then you just wiggle your mouse and you can afk for another 20 minutes. I like using Guthans here since they can hit a bit of damage, and if you're lucky enough to get a dark bow, you can make some decent money while training. Dark beasts do require 90 slayer to kill, so this is definitely a higher level AFK method.

Bandits (20 mins)

ree

Another place where you can AFK for 20 minutes is fighting bandits in the desert. With a Saradomin or Zamorak item, these guys will attack you endlessly. Mid levelled players can use full Guthans here to sustain their health, and at higher levels, you can wear armour like justiciar to AFK for 20 minutes as well.

Nightmare Zone (20 mins)

ree

Yet another place with a 20 minute AFK time is the nightmare zone, where it's possible to AFK for 20 minutes with Guthans here. Although you can also use absorption potions to afk for around 10 minutes, although 5 minutes is the longest you should AFK if you're using overloads with absorptions.

Spiders (5 mins)

ree

The final free to play method of this video, is fighting spiders in the Stronghold of Security. These are arguably the best AFK combat experience in free to play, where you can safely kill them for 5 to 10 minutes with full rune, then you just run out of view to reset the aggression.

Ammonite Crabs (10 mins)

ree

Ammonite crabs deserve a mention in this video since they have the highest hitpoints out of all the crabs. This makes them excellent for mid to high level AFK training, and can also be a decent source of fossils. This method requires access to Fossil Island, which needs the bone voyage quest.

Splashing (20 mins)

ree

I’ve spoken about splashing a couple of times already, but it can be considered a decent AFK magic training method. Its going to take anywhere between 300 to 1000 hours to splash to 99 magic, depending on which spell you use, and you can AFK for 20 minutes at a time.

String Jewellery (50 secs)

ree

The final method of this video, is string jewellery, which is a fast AFK magic training method. This requires the Lunar Diplomacy quest, and can also be a profitable training method with the correct jewellery. Most players usually string gold amulets thought since they're cheap and have a proven record of stable pricing. With this spell, you can AFK for 50 seconds at a time, with XP rates of 150k XP per hour.
